Songs from the Other Side

There are songs of love and there are songs of hate.

I've been looking at and listening to songs of what I thought were of hate. There seemed to be quite a few - more than I anticipated about the Munich Air Disaster in which several Manchester United players died.

I can make sense of football fan chants - the sung 'banter' that ridicules the opposing factions. These chants allow fans to express their love for their own team in a unique collective voice. But chants are not always 'banter'.

Sometimes they come not from hate, but from something more fanatical than that -from the darkest concept of love .
