Beneath is a very evocative word - it suggests something else is lying just below the surface, it implies a hierarchy and evokes the sense of secret places. My 'Beneath' is a drawing made in Unison pastel on bamboo art paper and is inspired by the former Mardy Lodge site, Maerdy, Wales.
I have always been captivated by the way the blackness of the slag and spoil heaps are exposed by wear or rain. There is sadly a more sinister side to the slipping and movement of such land and not so far away is Aberfan. This is why for me this landscape is a living memorial. It holds the relics of its past close to its surface and as you walk or ride across it you reveal the past because you are there today.
My 'Beneath' drawing is now on special sale and the whole proceeds from its sale will go to the Chair Fund. Usually £240 - now £85 (framed). Help us get bums on seats...now our events are getting more popular we need more chairs! see www.facebook.com/workersgallery for more info
